Who I Am

I’m Nicci Van Matre, founder of Van Matre Designs & Co. LLC. Right now, the “& Co” is aspirational—it’s just me. But I am building this company with the same grit I used to rebuild my own life.

The Backstory

I’m an Electrical Engineer by trade, originally from Niceville, FL. I followed the rules: I got the stable degree, landed the dream job with the DoD, and built a “safe” life. But in 2018, that life broke. I developed a severe infection that landed me in the ICU for months. Doctors told me I likely wouldn’t leave the hospital alive, and if I did, I’d never walk or use my hands again.

The Turn

They were wrong. When insurance cut off my rehab, I went home in a wheelchair. Every day, rain or shine, I dragged myself to the backyard and used a chain-link fence to pull myself up. I ate more dirt than I care to admit. But I relearned how to stand. I relearned how to walk. And most importantly, I relearned how to use my hands.

The Business

That survival instinct is now the engine of my company. I am back working as a Senior Electrical Design Engineer, but my true purpose is Van Matre Designs. I am merging my technical precision with my artistic chaos to create distinct product lines:

• Even/UNeven: Abstract, “asymmetrical symmetry” art representing the beauty of a disordered life.

• Differentially Impaired: Niche apparel and humor products for engineers and tech professionals.

• Mark Your Territory: Fun, commercial, gift-focused products designed for broad appeal.

• UNmotivational: Satirical and sarcastic designs and coloring books that say the quiet thoughts out loud.

• LED Signs: Custom LED designs combining engineering precision and creative expression, built to bring ideas to life.

The Future

This isn’t just about me. My long-term goal is to host and mentor other designers who lack the funds to launch. I want to provide a digital storefront and guidance to help talented creators move past fear and into execution.

I have engineered my way out of a death sentence. I am building something meaningful, creative, and enduring.
